Consulting for guides & outfitters

Your trips cover the guides, the gear, and the per-person fees. Do they cover your business?

Annual permits, liability insurance, certifications, accounting, booking software, your own pay. You probably know what each one costs. I help you turn the total into the number that matters: how many guests, at what price, it takes to come out ahead.

Now in beta: I’m inviting a small number of guiding and outfitting businesses to work with me at no cost while I refine my process. I want to see more outfitters build businesses that last, and this is where that starts. How the beta works

Plate IEvery good route starts with knowing where you are.
The approach

You already know your business from the inside. I help you see it in the numbers, so your next decisions come with clarity and confidence.

You know your terrain, your guests, and your guides in ways an outsider never could. But running a business on top of guiding is a lot to shoulder, and the numbers and bigger-picture questions are usually the first thing to get pushed to the off-season, and then past it.

Already on your plate

  • Guiding trips and reading conditions
  • Hiring, scheduling, and keeping good staff
  • Answering guest questions before, during, and after the trip
  • Gear, vehicles, permits, and everything that breaks at once
  • Doing the books at the kitchen table after a long day
  • Making the calls no one else can make

That leaves the numbers with whatever time is left.

What I bring

  • Dedicated time to dig into your bookings, costs, and records
  • An outside perspective on what the numbers are actually saying
  • Clear answers about which trips and seasons are working
  • The problems and opportunities worth your attention
  • A practical path forward that fits how you already operate

Your experience, plus a second set of eyes on the business behind it.

Is this a fit?

You know the river and the route. The business has its own terrain.

Many outfitters inherit the business or take it over because they love the work, and the work doesn't leave much time for spreadsheets. I work alongside owners to turn the information you already have into clear answers you can act on.

A good fit if

  • You're busy all season but not sure you're making money.
  • You suspect some trips lose money, but can't say which ones.
  • Your prices came from the competition, or from the last owner.
  • You want to understand your own numbers, not hand them off.

What I don't do

  • I'm not your accountant, attorney, or insurance broker. When you need one, I'll tell you.
  • I won't look for savings in safety, guide ratios, training, or gear replacement.
  • I don't sell software or lock you into a system. The tools are yours.
  • If I'm not the right help, I'll say so on the first call.
The focus

What we'll look at together

Every operation is different. Rafting, climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and outdoor education and training each come with their own seasons, permits, guide ratios, and equipment costs.

The work starts with your business, not a template. Most engagements touch four areas:

01
Trip economics

Know which trips are pulling their weight

Which trips, programs, and seasons earn their keep, and which ones quietly cost you once everything is counted.

"The half-day trips were paying for the full-day ones."

You'd walk away with: every trip and season ranked by what it really earns, and why.

Example trip comparisonPer departure
Half-day trip
$840after direct costs
Full-day trip
$510after direct costs

Illustrative figures, not client results.

02
Example break-evenOne departure
Illustrative break-even chart. At $150 per guest, revenue covers guides and gear at three guests, and covers the trip's full cost, including its share of insurance, permits, and the owner's pay, at five guests.

Illustrative: $150 per guest. Guides and gear cost $360 per trip plus $30 per guest. The trip's share of insurance, permits, and your own pay adds $240.

Break-even and operating targets

Know what each trip really has to carry.

The group size, price, and bookings it takes to cover the trip and its share of everything behind it.

"Counting guides and gear, this trip breaks even at three guests. Add its share of insurance, permits, and your own pay, and it needs five."

You'd walk away with: the minimum group size and price for each trip, and the bookings it takes to cover the season.

03
Pricing and profitability

Set prices that reflect your costs and your value

Whether each price covers the trip’s full cost with something left for you, and how it compares with what similar trips charge, so you know where you have room.

"Your private trips are priced below what they cost to run."

You'd walk away with: each price checked against its true cost and the local market, with options for where to adjust.

Where a $150 ticket goesPer guest
  • Guide pay$55
  • Transport and food$25
  • Gear wear and permits$20
  • Overhead share$30
  • Left over$20

Metrics and practical tools

A few numbers worth watching, season after season

We choose a short list of measures that matter to you, with targets set from your own numbers. Depending on how we work together, that can include regular check-ins and a simple workbook built around how you already operate, so you can keep it up to date yourself.

"Inquiries are up, but fewer are booking."

You'd walk away with: the numbers to watch and the targets to aim for.

Field notes

Here's where we'd start

I won't promise a result before I understand your business. Here's what the first few weeks of working together could look like for two common situations:

Example scenario

Busy all season, but is it profitable?

"We're booked solid, but I can't tell which trips are actually paying the bills."

Where we'd start

  1. Gather what you have. Booking exports, trip calendars, payroll, and expense records, in whatever shape they're in, kept confidential.
  2. Organize it into one picture. Revenue, guide pay, and direct costs lined up for each trip, plus each trip’s share of overhead and your own pay.
  3. Flag the questions worth asking. For example, why one trip type has thinner margins, or how much the shoulder season really costs.
  4. Talk through what it means. Together, we look at what the numbers suggest for next season's schedule and pricing.

What you'd have: a trip-by-trip view of your season and a short list of decisions to consider.

Example scenario

Prices haven't changed in years

"Our costs keep going up, but I'm nervous about raising prices."

Where we'd start

  1. Line up prices and costs. What each trip charges today, and what it really takes to run once its share of overhead is counted.
  2. Find the break-even point. The group size each trip needs to cover its full cost at today’s prices.
  3. Look at demand. Which trips fill early, which rarely fill, and what similar trips charge nearby.
  4. Weigh the options together. Where a change makes sense, where it doesn't, and the tradeoffs either way.

What you'd have: an honest read on where your pricing stands, so the decision is yours to make with the numbers in hand.

These are illustrations, not client stories. Every engagement starts with your business and your questions.

Free, with no obligation

Start with a conversation. Leave knowing where to look first.

We'll spend about an hour on your business: your trips, your season, and what’s keeping you up at night. Everything you share stays confidential, and if you’d like an NDA in place first, I’m happy to sign yours. Within a few days, I'll send you a one-page "What I heard" summary. I genuinely enjoy these conversations, and you’ll leave with something useful either way.

  • What you told me, in plain language, so you can check I understood.
  • Where I'd look first: where a closer look would likely pay off most.
  • Suggested next steps, including which services fit, or none if you don't need them.

It's yours to keep, whether or not we work together.

Built for outdoor businesses

Hi, I'm Elise.

I’ve spent 16 years in the outdoor industry, across military, private, education, nonprofit, and adaptive recreation programs. I’ve run operations, managed budgets, and built programs from the ground up, so I know what it takes to keep guides paid, gear safe, and trips running.

What I’ve enjoyed most in every one of those roles is teaching: helping a new guide find their footing, or walking a program lead through their first budget. I started Beta & Bearing because I love this industry and want to see the people in it succeed. That means I don’t just hand you a report. I walk you through where every number comes from, so you can keep using them long after we’re done.

Safety, guide ratios, and training aren't where we look for savings. We find the margin elsewhere.

Common questions

Questions owners ask

Straight answers to what owners usually want to know before they reach out.

What does the beta program involve?

You get consulting at no cost, scoped to your business. In return, I ask for honest feedback along the way, a short wrap-up conversation, and if you’re comfortable with it, permission to share an anonymized example of what we found. Read more about the beta.

Is the first conversation really free?
Yes. Discovery, including your one-page "What I heard" summary and a proposed scope, is free with no obligation. If I don't think I can help, the summary will say so.
My records are a mess. Is that a problem?
No. Share what you have, in whatever shape it's in. If you're not tracking much yet, we'll start by getting the basics in place before any deeper analysis.
What will it cost after the beta?
Pricing will depend on the package and the size of your business, and smaller businesses will pay less. I also set aside a few scholarships each year.
How do you handle my information?
Files are shared through encrypted file transfer and used only for your engagement. Our agreement includes confidentiality terms, and if you have your own NDA, I'm happy to sign it.
What should I have ready for our first conversation?
Nothing is required. If it's handy, a list of your trips and prices, a rough idea of last season's bookings, and your biggest question about the business.
Get in touch
